A Sands Family Genealogy
by John Keating Sands

The Sands family and various others have collected certain papers for a number of years. From time to time, I stored them. I have found that over the years I have become increasingly interested in them. Opinions would be voiced that would affect the rest of the family, often in lasting ways, such as why my father’s family ended up in Austria rather than England for their education.

I put this book together for my family so that they would have a sense of our family history. This collection of material consists of original photographs, obituaries, newspaper articles, anecdotal conversation and family stories, as well as excerpts from books and letters. I have put all of the material into major family groups, one of the Sands family and one of the Keating (my mother’s) family and their key relatives, which will be the second book. The names of each group occur in all parts of the English speaking world. This study includes blood relatives and various other friends. There are four groups of Sands unrelated to each other in the United States in Block Island, New York, Virginia and Maryland. The Virginia group includes the Sands of Bermuda.

My father collected most of these letters, I believe; I put them all together. I was also the recipient of letters and photos as people cleared out their estates. When my father died, everything went through an executor, and I was selected to receive many of the photos and documents. I kept them in the cellar in Oyster Bay. These letters and notes of my father reflect a time past and events that occurred during the expansion of the United States in the Pacific and the effect that it had on the dramatic growth of Japan

The main collection of my father’s letters is in the American Catholic Historical Society at St. Charles Borromeo in Overbrook, PA. 4,000 pieces of paper were lent to them and continue to be in their possession.
